Some time ago I started a new website that only received 100 or so page views a month and very few search engine visitors. I sold wood products made in my shop. My product links were kept short because of my inexperience. The first lesson I learned from my SEO research is that when folks are searching for wood products they use rather specific terms in the search box. I learned that using long-tail url for each product type would generate more organic search engine visitors. What is a long-tail url? The name of your websiteoak_paper_towel_holder.htm (not a valid link). I did some keyword searches using Google keyword tool and found more keywords that I could you uses in my product descriptions. The most important ones were used in H1 and in H2 (H1 heading, H2 subheading).
After changing both my product descriptions and product page links, I resubmitted my site to Google and other search engines. In about a week or two, I started to see more site visitors from not only Google but, from other less well know search engines. I did see a marked improvement in sales. The site was selling one item per 600 page views to one item every 200 page views on average. I use a stat counter that gives me real time stats and a I can follow my visitors page views all the way up to my thank you page.
I wanted more orders and so I needed to find a way to increase sales. I used one of my url long-tail keyword to perform a Google search. I found my site at the bottom of page 4. I was really happy to find it but disappointed in the way it was presented by Google. The text below the link look hooky. So I did more SEO research and found that I needed to improve my product page tile and description in the HTML code. It took a while to see the new text in Google. But what an improvement in receiving organic search results in my stats. Current I sell two items per 100 page views on average. I continue to tweak my site and look forward t improving sales.
